Losing a Daughter in Combat

It’s tough for most Americans to learn much about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that the U.S. military has waged since 9/11. So it’s all the more important to pay attention when combat chronicles – and their impact back home – surface. Anna Simon covered the 2004 death in Iraq of Kimberly Hampton for [...]

If women can serve on submarines, Dad can be tapped as the Military Spouse of the Year. Last week, Military Spouse magazine picked Jeremy Hilton the first male Military Spouse of the Year since it began bestowing the honor, on behalf of the nation's 1.1 million military spouses, in 2008. He got the nod for his work in advocating for military family members with disabilities, while being a stay-at-home dad to two kids: 9-year-old Katie, who has severe disabilities, and 2-year-old Jack. Jeremy, a former submariner who left the Navy to tend to Katie, is married to Air Force Lieut. Colonel Renae Hilton, assigned to the Office of Special Investigations at Maryland’s Andrews Air Force Base.

Women in Direct Ground Combat? Not Quite Yet

In a decided lack of fanfare, the Pentagon announced a new assignment policy for women, set to take effect on May 14. The so-called collocation rules have been set aside, a policy that had been in effect since 1993 when Title 10, sections 6015 and 8549 were repealed, allowing women to serve in combat aircraft [...]

Gender-Blind Fleet, Huh?

The Navy Uniform Board is messing around with uniforms again…this time to make the uniforms “gender blind.” In other words, the women will now be wearing men’s uniforms and covers. This Is Only a Test: Navy Women Donning Dixie Cups

The Navy’s personnel chief, after a survey of nearly 400 women in the sea service, says there’s room for improvement in the uniforms they wear. “As a result of fleet feedback received from female sailors during Navy leadership All-Hands calls and inputs received by the Navy Uniform Board regarding women’s uniform quality, design and fit [...]

Paper Cuts

Command Sergeant Major Teresa King – relieved of command of the service’s drill-sergeant school at Fort Jackson, S.C., last November – was reinstated Friday, only days before she is set to relinquish command. The Army reversed shortly after King filed a complaint alleging that her suspension stemmed from racism, sexism, and her lack of combat [...]

Hey Army: Why You So Far Behind the Marines When It Comes to Women?

The recent announcement by Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos that he is exploring ways to better integrate female Marines into combat units came hot on the heels of a policy shift that will allow women to attend the Marine Corps Infantry Officers Course. As Mark Thompson explained, this is great news for women in [...]

Semper Female? The Commandant on Women in Combat

General James Amos, the Marine commandant, has issued an ALMAR – an “all Marine message” – telling his forces that he is exploring ways to get female Marines into combat units:

Sexual Assault in the Ranks Up 4% Last Year

The number of sexual assaults alleged by military personnel crept up slightly in 2011. The rise from 2,617 in 2010 to 2,723 represents a 4% increase. “One sexual assault in the military is one too many,” the Pentagon’s latest report on sexual assault in the ranks concludes. “While the Department has taken bold steps to [...]
