“Embrace Our Solution”

The Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee have posted a new video timed to President Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday night. They’re calling on him to join with them in cutting the federal workforce so that a second $500 billion batch of Pentagon budget cuts required under existing law can be avoided.

“Tonight, Mr. President, instead of a veto threat, we ask you to embrace our solution,” Mississippi Rep. Steven Palazzo says. There’s no chance Obama will endorse the Down Payment to Protect National Security Act (isn’t a down payment the first of many yet to come?), but the Republicans sound reasonable: previous HASC GOP video appeals like this have used keening violins and haunting piano riffs to drive home their end-of-days message. This one features only a gently lilting acoustic guitar.

Trash can be deadly. You can get a hint of that from the contract solicitation issued Tuesday by the Defense Logistics Agency’s European disposition office seeking “hazardous waste services in southwest Asia.”
