Just a day after the Justice Department revealed a plot to siphon sensitive U.S. technology to Iran – some of which ended up in roadside bombs killing U.S. troops in Iraq – now comes word from the feds that an American is going to jail for trying to sell Iran parts for its fighter jets and attack helicopters.
MACON, GA. – A Georgia man was sentenced today to 46 months in prison, a $10,000 fine and was ordered to forfeit $160,362 in connection with his efforts to illegally export military components for fighter jets and attack helicopters from the United States to Iran.
…the Justice Department announced Wednesday. A couple of things worth noting:
– The aircraft involved – F-4 and F-5 fighters, and AH-1 and UH-1 choppers – are all U.S. made.
– Our export controls must be pretty good if the Iranian government is forced to hunt for spare parts for jet-fighter aircraft and helicopter gunships at a place called The Parts Guys, a Florida firm that maintained a warehouse at the Middle Georgia Municipal Airport in Macon, Ga.
– Doesn’t the penalty here seem a little soft?
