Contaminated Dust Story Does Need that Question Mark Headline

Thanks to Ron Capps for highlighting the provocative story by Kelly Kennedy in USA Today about how contaminated dust in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait may have triggered high rates of respiratory, neurological, and heart ailments among U.S. troops. The dust is laden with toxic metals and bacteria.

I’m a genuine fan of the hugely talented Kelly Kennedy. Her dedication to these kinds of stories is commendable. But if the dust is making troops ill after a one year tour, wouldn’t there be a heck of a lot of sick Iraqis, Afghans, and Kuwaitis who breathe the stuff for their whole lives?

Obama Cleverly Leading from Behind — Again

The quiet coalition has come together to reverse the decline of the opposition rebel forces in Syria, according to this nice front-pager in Wednesday’s Washington Post. Much like in the case of Libya, the Obama Administration is hanging back and letting the local “market” determine his military response. He simply refuses to take the strategic lead, which is frustrating to many and yet decidedly clever on his part.
