Explain This Obama – Then You Might Get People To Listen To You For A Change
    .
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said that Libya did not pose a threat to the United States before the U.S. began its military campaign against the North African country.
    .
On “This Week,” ABC News’ Senior White House Correspondent Jake Tapper asked Gates, “Do you think Libya posed an actual or imminent threat to the United States?”
    .
“No, no,” Gates said in a joint appearance with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “It was not — it was not a vital national interest to the United States, but it was an interest and it was an interest for all of the reasons Secretary Clinton talked about. The engagement of the Arabs, the engagement of the Europeans, the general humanitarian question that was at stake,” he said.

It’s totally the same. Shock and awe with massive amount of troops and air and naval assets a long occupation with mostly failed and wasted years before we paid off the opposition.

    Compared to airstrikes.

    Is so the same.

It’s funny. I don’t hear a single person in the real world around me equating this (and I live in conservoland and post in a fairly equal bunch of settings). Only pundits, media and politicians. I want to tear my hair out when I read how hard THAT world is trying to make this Iraq.

    One slight catch:

Is this video a joke? There’s no equivalency here. I expect more from Time Journalists.

A proper comparison is the first gulf war, not the last one (er, I mean the current one).

I think it’s sad that you post a video supporting the anti-Obama rhetoric as if those in support were just mindless idiots.

It’s not worth anyone’s time. In reality, which isn’t relevant to this video, the correct comparison for the current mission isn’t Bush Jr. in Iraq– ginning up a fake crisis to scare politicians & the citizenry into an invasion– but Bush Sr. in Iraq after Saddam pulled back from Kuwait. We’ve seen patient & intelligent work to set up no fly zones, with UN & NATO support, in order to prevent a dictator from maintaining his military assault on a mostly civilian group in a distinct geographical region. This was good news for the Kurds, & the citizenry of Benghazi. There are plenty of valid reasons one might invoke to oppose what we’re doing, but “LOL HIPOCRITES!1!!” isn’t one of them.
    -
The video also falsely credits Bush Jr.’s Iraq invasion as the cause of Libya’s foreign policy reorientation. Literate people know that’s not true, as evidenced by this May 2001 article, “The Rogue Who Came in from the Cold”: http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/57032/ray-takeyh/the-rogue-who-came-in-from-the-cold
    -
Mark Thompson was demanding that the president do something right away, up until the moment that the US acted. (See this post, illustrated with an image of Picasso’s Guernica, entitled “Libya? Your Move, Mr. President: http://swampland.blogs.time.com/2011/03/08/libya-your-move-mr-president/ ) Now, like Newt Gingrich, he’s a bundle of resentment flailing about in search of some rationale for his emotional outbursts against the ongoing military campaign.

Until a second look, I thought Rusty was quoting somebody else calling either Rupert Murdoch or the Koch brothers “Crazed lunatics”.
    .
Also, I would call unions, a safety net and environmental regulations a part of our way of life.
    .
So, it was only when I took a second look to realize that Rusty copied and pasted criticisms about the Koch brothers and Murdoch and made them about Soros instead.

You have just shown the case for the bombing of Libya.
    .
Are you back to supporting the bombing of Libya?
    .
When are you going to run out onto the streets shouting “U S A! U S A! U S A!” and hold signs saying “support our troops”?

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

    Elvis,
    .
    Wish I said that.
    .
This is almost exactly like the first Gulf War, but, with attacks on civilians in real time, not from four years earlier when Ronald Reagan sent our tax dollars to pay for the 1988 attack on the Kurds.

  • logicloop

You know ive seen some stupid equivications in my time but this one might take the cake. If you want to make the point that there is no real sense of an end game or why one country is interviened in while another is not, im open to listening. If you want to make stupid comparisons between two entirely different events, seperated by entirely different run ups, executions and results fine be my guest. Just dont be suprised when people who read point out just how pathetic this is. Because the 2 countries both have islamic majorities does not make the two events similar.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

This video is classic of the right wing talking machine.

When the Mainstream Media, NPR or even truly liberal sources like Pacifica Radio want to make an argument they take both sides of the argument and let the right wing say dumb things until they lose.

The right wing has Barack the Magic Negro, a fake Al Sharpton or, just a cartoon woman in a video and beats the argument of “Obama is awesome”.

One wingnut here had a link to a right wing blog. That blog, also, linked to Rush Limbaugh telling everybody that all liberals were watching Dancing with the stars and angry that Sarah Palin’s daughter was doing well.

    WTF?

I guess, then, according to Rush Limbaugh,I must be a conservative since I don’t give a flying duck about dancing with the stars.

No wonder why you right wingers are so confused. You’ve only heard one side of the argument and cartoon characters responding.

  • logicloop

another point that i just recalled, wasnt the run up to the iraq war about the magic mushroom cloud coming to kill us all? Didnt it only become about freedom for those iraqis *after* it was discovered that they lied, im sorry, misread the intelligence? So that little song and dance in the clip about W’s freedom agenda leading the way is just as phony as the reason iraq *originally* got invaded for.

  • earljr1

The progressive mindset remains an enigma, newfreedom. Their hysterical rants against GWB appear vapid now as they all line up in support of Barry and his clueless foreign policy.

Schizophrenia comes to mind, but I really think it is a case of progressives being simply who they are. Unable to grasp reality, they manipulate facts to bolster their own fanciful version of world events. Barry, good…GWB, bad. Uncontrolled spending, good,…fiscal restraint and holding unions accountable, bad. Disposing of Sadaam, bad…obliterating Ghadaffi and propping up hezbollah and the fayadeen, good. Go figure.

What ultimately shapes up in the mid east is beyond Barry’s ability to manipulate and cajole. So much for his promise to engage our enemies with discourse….how has that worked out for us?

  • nflfoghorn

I don’t give a walking duck about aforementioned show ;)

Ay-yup. That’s how I recall it too. In fact, there were months and months of priming the “doomsday” scenario. Then it was all “Oops, my bad. We are liberating people.”

You clearly are growing less and less mature as time goes on, Earl, so if it were possible to age backwards, it would be you.

From the article this liberal was quoting from:
    .

In a major diplomatic victory for the Libyan opposition, France has become the first country to formally recognise Libya’s rebel leadership, pledging to exchange ambassadors between Paris and the Libyan opposition stronghold of Benghazi.

    .
    http://swampland.blogs.time.com/2011/03/10/morning-must-reads-stage/
    .
Rusty supported action in Libya before he opposed it.
    .
    In other words:
    .
War done by Republicans = good.
    .
War done by Democrats = bad.
    .
I supported Bush Sr.’s war in Iraq in 1990 and I was the same age as the soldiers who got sent.
    .
I was disappointed that there was no draft after 9/11.
    .
Hoping that I would get sent to Afghanistan or stay stateside, I volunteered at age 32 for the Army and was medically rejected in 2003.
    .
Some military actions are good, others aren’t.
    .
This is good since it is to prevent real time slaughter rather than a reaction to slaughter paid for by US tax dollars Reagan sent Hussein in 1988 as was the first gulf war and done as a response to the world demand for justice and not done based upon a a lie by an infamous pathological liar with the code name Curveball.

    .

Sometimes you are humorous without even trying, patrick. I make a typographical error in listing my age and you get completely hysterical. (what gives with that…a little PPD, perhaps?) Hey, I made myself a year OLDER, numbskull…most people try to shave years off!
I AM 39 now, patrick and shoot…you didn’t even send me a birthday card…..oh well, life goes on, anyway.
