First Chinese Stealth Fighter Ready For Takeoff?

Aviation buffs are buzzing over blurry photographs now surfacing on Chinese military websites purporting to show Beijing’s first stealth fighter jet, the Chengdu J-20 fighter. Chinese aviation fans says they have been snapping pics of the jet during recent taxi tests, with a first flight likely still weeks away. It’s the best holiday gift Western air power advocates could wish for — or further evidence of the self-licking ice cream cone nature of defense spending. Most likely, both.

Half the fun of such sightings is trying to determine if they are real, or simply Photoshopped fighters created on computer screens. If you think it may be real, you try to figure out its utility — and how other air forces might counter it. “Why would China need or want a short-range stealth aircraft?” asks Bill Sweetman of Aviation Week, a pre-eminent new-plane hunter. “Any targets with defenses that call for that capability are a long way from the mainland.”

Some observers believe the jet is genuine, and overdue. “China has the money, they have the industrial expertise, they have the scientific base, the drive and motivation and of course the benefit of American research over 30 years acquired by legal or illegal means,” one notes. “These enablers give China wide latitude in matching or exceeding American designs that are now 20 years old.”

Others aren’t so impressed. “Personally I think it is piloted by sharks and armed with an internally mounted death ray (technology provided by escaped Nazis who the Chinese found on the moon during their yet to be revealed highly secretive moon mission) with wing hard points wired for photon torpedos and Zeus’s lightning rods,” a second opined. “Oh, it is also a `carrier killer’.” That, of course, is a major concern of the U.S. Navy. If war were ever to come between China and the U.S., it would likely be over Taiwan — and U.S. aircraft carriers would be key to winning that fight. Stay tuned.

Stealth fighter or phantom menace it still offers a reminder that a disinterest in science education can over the long haul be fatal to a society. Something to think about next time someone claims that Climate Science is a hoax or that evolution is ‘just a theory’.

  • freeinpa

“that a disinterest in science education”
    .
Somehow you manage to confuse a “disinterest” in science with an outright failure of the wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic Party-labor unions. We spend more money on education per student than anyone and yet we rank 23rd in science and 31st in math.
    .
These numbers are more reflective as to how “global warming” becomes an accepted theory than how we have a disinterest in science.
    .
Speaking of evolution- if survival of the fittest is proven theory why do liberals always interfere with “endangered species” demands? Do you not beleive the theory or is it more liberal arrogance that they have they answer for everything?

  • http://phd9.blogspot.com Paul Dirks

Once again, we disagree less than you might think. Misunderstanding the fact that human activity is no more or less ‘natural’ than other facets of nature does indeed often lead to confused thinking. But one of the gifts of being human is the ability to extrapolate much further into the future than other creatures. If we can find ways to mitigate long term harm caused by short-term thinking, then it’s probably important that we do so.

Hey free, do you get flu shots ever year. Why? If there isn’t evolution of the flu virus, then one shot will do you for life. Quit taking them and save the $29 or Medicare paying the bill.

If you have farmer friends, ask them why Round-Up isn’t killing all the weeds any more?

Evolution is a naturally and continuing adaption of organisms to meet changing needs. I know that is over your head (neck, armpit?) but only the really stupid disbelieve in Global Warming and Evolution. Even some of the most religious 6000-year old earth believers, have some amazing explanations of how things happen.

The education comment is true-obviously it failed on you and how many years ago was that?

Realize that over 50% of the teachers in the country aren’t union and in the south, they are managed with what we call plantation-management style-do a good job and there will be an extra quarter an hour.

And if you don’t like unions, did you work Christmas or Saturday or Sunday. If you had the day off, thank the unions or you would still be working 60 hours a week for less than minimal wage. Come on down if you like that since Tyson is always looking for some quarter an hour people and you do have legal status, don’t you?

  • http://phd9.blogspot.com Paul Dirks

Also, a bad teacher won’t prevent someone from learning who wants to. But a culture that actually mocks intelligence and celebrates mediocrity and whose heroes are not the teachers but rather the athletes and the gangsters is not a culture thats on the rise. And our friends here at Time/Warner have as much to say about the direction we go as anyone you could care to point to.

    .
The key word is “extrapolate” which is French for guess.
The global warming crowd are now hiding behind the euphemism “climate change”. There are those scientists who fear a return to global cooling as we feared would happen in the 1970s (remember that extrapolation). The sudden drop in sunspots in the summer of 2007 could portend a return to pre-1850 temperature which doesn’t fit the meme being pushed for the past 10 years.
    .
If there is one thing that should give us pause about the climate models(?) is the snowstorm this past weekend. At 3:52am Sunday morning the weather center warned of 6-8 inches of snow starting at 7am (3 hours) for the Philadelphia area. It began to snow around 12:30pm and we received about 3-4 inches. This is a storm pattern that was followd for days and could not come within 5 1/2 hrs of a start time and off by 50% in accumulation. All based on models. Now we are to believe that these massaged global warming models will be more accurate 30 years out.

“Hey free, do you get flu shots ever year. Why? If there isn’t evolution of the flu virus, then one shot will do you for life.”
    .
First that is how humans survive putting it at the top of the food chain. Second, one shot for life would not work. Ever hear of a “booster shot”? Eventually they lose their effectiveness. But what I was speaking to was human intervention in the survival of the fittest. If you believe that to be true (and I do) how can you interfere with the survival of any species by placing it on the endangered species list? Who are you to decide which species lives in the theory of evolution?
    .
“but only the really stupid disbelieve in Global Warming”
    .
And this is what is passing for debate from the left. Try and silence the opponent. Speaking of stupidity in today’s NYT we have an article that now claims we have global warming and the hottest month and decade ever and it is causing (wait for it) record snow and global record low temperatures!
    .
Now as a hedge the left has ducked for cover under “global climate change”. Back in the 70s we had scientific proof(?) and screamed the sky was falling with global freezing (wrong) , now its global warming.
    .
As I said to Mr. Dirks, the left needs to find another way to steal money from the American people.

    Paul,

This seems rather general to me. If you’re saying its our culture which “mocks intelligence and celebrates mediocrity”, then how to explain why our universities consistently monopolize the top 100 rankings whereas China barely breaks in (usually just Beida).
    .
It’s one thing to rightly mock Sarah Palin, it’s another thing to generalize and say that we’ve all turned into Palin clones. More specifically, our issues with losing overwhelming S&T dominance lies within the problems ingrained within our basic education system, rather than a culture.
    .
But going back to the subject, this won’t be it, but we need a Sputnik moment, that’s for sure.

    Freakinpa,
    .
First, Global Warming means that the average temperature on the planet is increasing every year while climate change is the effect. It’s like HIV is an infection which results in AIDS the disease. Or, more commonly, the rhino virus is the infection while the common cold is the disease.
    .
Second, many times of the year it does not snow because the upper atmosphere is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and can not hold any moisture for the lower atmosphere to turn into snow. That is why Washington DC gets more snow than Antarctica.
    .
Third, using your very flawed reasoning, when somebody tells you that Americans are older than ever before but you are in a maternity ward full of newborns that the average age of all of Americans is one day old. It is the median temperature over the whole planet over the whole year. So, just as being in a room full of newborn infants in a maternity ward in Philadelphia does not prove that average age in America is not getting older, cold spells do not prove that the average temperature over the planet over a one year period is not increasin.
    .
Keep in mind that these cold days are put into the average and, still, including these cold days with the Southern Hemisphere now in Summer and with our Hemisphere entering Summer six months from now, it averages a higher temperature.
    .
Evolution is a basic tenant of biology. Bacteria with the shortest lifespans and using more mutatable RNA rather than DNA evolves the quickest, but, ask your farmer friends about pesticides. One ought to use several different kinds because, by accident of evolution, somewhere between 0.1% and 3% of the insects are each immune to each of the pesticides. If you use, say, three, then it would only be 3% or 3% of 3% of the insects which will survive (27 out of one million) and, for becoming immune, these insects often pay a heavy price in terms of ability to reproduce and thrive.
    .
Your alternative theory, I guess, is that one time Episcopalian Seminarian Charles Darwin as well as Roman Catholic Monk, Gregor Mendel followed by tens of thousands of biologists over the next 150 years were closet Satan worshipers is pathetic.
    .
Your alternative theory that, at age 19 Al Gore began a 40 year conspiracy to create Global Warming so that he could become a sexy movie star after he divorced is as weak.
    .
Some Christian sects have their careers based upon every single word of the bible being the literal, not metaphorical truth and will push hard against science no matter what.

What is more likely to be occurring is a cycle. Problem with most models they become masters of trend line analysis.
    .
“Exxon Mobil, among others have all of their investments in incredibly expensive oil wells and oil refineries which will dramatically decrease in value if action to prevent climate change occurs”
    .

And I notice you back filling now with “climate change” vs “global warming” because despite all the “facts” from the left, its not clear so now they are heading for cover.

“…ignoring the fact that in the 70s, “scientists” and liberals warned us based on their science we were headed for global freezing.”
    .
You’re view of science is so primitive that you are not aware of the known fact that there are multiple types of pollution.
    .
First, the earliest signs of global warming took place.
    .
Second, a detection in a hole in ozone layer took place due to the use of chlorofluorocarbons.
    .
“Ozone depletion describes two distinct, but related observations: a slow, steady decline of about 4% per decade in the total volume of ozone in Earth’s stratosphere (the ozone layer) since the late 1970s, and a much larger, but seasonal, decrease in stratospheric ozone over Earth’s polar regions during the same period. The latter phenomenon is commonly referred to as the ozone hole. In addition to this well-known stratospheric ozone depletion, there are also tropospheric ozone depletion events, which occur near the surface in polar regions during spring.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were invented by Thomas Midgley, Jr. in the 1920s. They were used in air conditioning/cooling units, as aerosol spray propellants prior to the 1980s, and in the cleaning processes of delicate electronic equipment. They also occur as by-products of some chemical processes. No significant natural sources have ever been identified for these compounds — their presence in the atmosphere is due almost entirely to human manufacture. As mentioned in the ozone cycle overview above, when such ozone-depleting chemicals reach the stratosphere, they are dissociated by ultraviolet light to release chlorine atoms. The chlorine atoms act as a catalyst, and each can break down tens of thousands of ozone molecules before being removed from the stratosphere. Given the longevity of CFC molecules, recovery times are measured in decades. It is calculated that a CFC molecule takes an average of 15 years to go from the ground level up to the upper atmosphere, and it can stay there for about a century, destroying up to one hundred thousand ozone molecules during that time.[12]
    .
Since the ozone layer absorbs UVB ultraviolet light from the Sun, ozone layer depletion is expected to increase surface UVB levels, which could lead to damage, including increases in skin cancer. This was the reason for the Montreal Protocol. Although decreases in stratospheric ozone are well-tied to CFCs and there are good theoretical reasons to believe that decreases in ozone will lead to increases in surface UVB, there is no direct observational evidence linking ozone depletion to higher incidence of skin cancer in human beings. This is partly because UVA, which has also been implicated in some forms of skin cancer, is not absorbed by ozone, and it is nearly impossible to control statistics for lifestyle changes in the populace.
    .
There are five areas of linkage between ozone depletion and global warming:
Radiative forcing from various greenhouse gases and other sources.

    * The same CO2 radiative forcing that produces global warming is expected to cool the stratosphere.[63] This cooling, in turn, is expected to produce a relative increase in ozone (O3) depletion in polar area and the frequency of ozone holes.[64]
    * Conversely, ozone depletion represents a radiative forcing of the climate system. There are two opposing effects: Reduced ozone causes the stratosphere to absorb less solar radiation, thus cooling the stratosphere while warming the troposphere; the resulting colder stratosphere emits less long-wave radiation downward, thus cooling the troposphere. Overall, the cooling dominates; the IPCC concludes that “observed stratospheric O3 losses over the past two decades have caused a negative forcing of the surface-troposphere system”[10] of about −0.15 ± 0.10 watts per square meter (W/m²).[65]
    * One of the strongest predictions of the greenhouse effect is that the stratosphere will cool.[63] Although this cooling has been observed, it is not trivial to separate the effects of changes in the concentration of greenhouse gases and ozone depletion since both will lead to cooling. However, this can be done by numerical stratospheric modeling. Results from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory show that above 20 km (12.4 miles), the greenhouse gases dominate the cooling.[66]
    * As noted under ‘Public Policy’, ozone depleting chemicals are also often greenhouse gases. The increases in concentrations of these chemicals have produced 0.34 ± 0.03 W/m² of radiative forcing, corresponding to about 14% of the total radiative forcing from increases in the concentrations of well-mixed greenhouse gases.[65]
    * The long term modeling of the process, its measurement, study, design of theories and testing take decades to document, gain wide acceptance, and ultimately become the dominant paradigm. Several theories about the destruction of ozone were hypothesized in the 1980s, published in the late 1990s, and are currently being proven. Dr Drew Schindell, and Dr Paul Newman, NASA Goddard, proposed a theory in the late 1990s, using a SGI Origin 2000 supercomputer, that modeled ozone destruction, accounted for 78% of the ozone destroyed. Further refinement of that model accounted for 89% of the ozone destroyed, but pushed back the estimated recovery of the ozone hole from 75 years to 150 years. (An important part of that model is the lack of stratospheric flight due to depletion of fossil fuels.)”

Groups that have higher degrees of self-reported patriotism (see Gallup’s Fourth of July release), such as older people and whites, are also more likely to correctly name the country from which America gained its independence. Only 66% of those aged 18-29 know that America gained its independence from England, compared to 79% of those aged 30 and older. The knowledge gap is even wider on the basis of gender and race:

    * 85% of men compared to only 69% of women know that America’s freedom was won from England
    * 80% of whites vs. 54% of blacks answered correctly

Four out of Five Americans Know Earth Revolves Around Sun
Probing a more universal measure of knowledge, Gallup also asked the following basic science question, which has been used to indicate the level of public knowledge in two European countries in recent years: “As far as you know, does the earth revolve around the sun or does the sun revolve around the earth?” In the new poll, about four out of five Americans (79%) correctly respond that the earth revolves around the sun, while 18% say it is the other way around. These results are comparable to those found in Germany when a similar question was asked there in 1996; in response to that poll, 74% of Germans gave the correct answer, while 16% thought the sun revolved around the earth, and 10% said they didn’t know. When the question was asked in Great Britain that same year, 67% answered correctly, 19% answered incorrectly, and 14% didn’t know.”

“In truth, smoking is not a leading cause of cancer.

Lung cancer is primarily a condition developed in old age, with average age of onset age 65, according to American Cancer Society literature. It’s estimated more people will die of lung cancer in populations of older Americans, and where more older Americans live, there more lung cancer deaths will be estimated. More incidence of lung cancer and deaths from lung cancer are likely to occur in Florida than in any other state. That’s where the highest percentage of retirees live. And that’s where ACS estimates more lung cancers will occur. Lung cancer is a disease of old age, not smoking.

Research has now firmly linked many of today’s cancers with tainted virus vaccinations given in the early 1950s. In 1960, researchers discovered that the polio vaccine distributed to certain states was infected with another virus called “Simian Virus 40.” SV-40 is a monkey virus that is not normally found in humans. Unknown at the time, it was present in hundreds of rhesus monkeys that were used to grow and harvest the polio vaccine. Injected into research animals, the SV-40 virus causes brain and lung cancers. Now, some forty years later, its effect on humans is just being investigated. ”

    Freakinpa,
    .
You keep on writing that liberals are scientists and scientists are liberals.
    .
If that were true then liberals brought you:
    .
    The light bulb.
    .
    The Television.
    .
    Computers.
    .
    The Internet.
    .

    .
    Cars.
    .
    The wheel.
    .
    Just to name a few.
    .
Considering that the labor movement brought us:
    .
    The end of child labor.
    .
    Minimum wages.
    .
Workers compensation (starting in the 1850s).
    .
    The 40 hour workweek.
    .
    and, the weekend.
    .
It would seem that all good things come from liberals and only the nuttiest right wing preachers are brought to you by conservatives.
    .
If I were you, I would not substitute “liberal” for “Scientists” it makes conservatives seem like Neanderthals but without spears (inventing is from scientists and if scientists are liberals, neanderthals were more advanced that you are.)

Read that this morning. Only a complex liberal mind can understand how global warming and hot temperatures can cause lower temperatures and snow. It seems last winter when it was warmer, the left didn’t try to push that argument. Every year a new excuse.

I’m sure you’re about to list all the ‘smart’ predators that you know off that are so stupid that the kill off all their prey thinking they’re better than they are while ‘oups’; where did all the sloth go?

    .

Rep. Ralph Hall (R-TX) plans to pursue an aggressive pro-oil agenda as the incoming chair of the House Science and Technology Committee. In an interview with the Dallas Morning News this month, the “unconditional champion of fossil fuels” described his zeal for the “holy grail” of the oil industry — the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge — discussed issuing subpoenas to interrogate climate scientists, and explained why the BP disaster “didn’t dampen his enthusiasm for offshore drilling.” Hall described the BP explosion that killed eleven men, injured dozens, and led to the despoilment of the Gulf of Mexico as a “tremendous,” “blossoming” flower of energy:

As we saw that thing bubbling out, blossoming out – all that energy, every minute of every hour of every day of every week – that was tremendous to me. That we could deliver that kind of energy out there – even on an explosion.

In an extensive report yesterday, the New York Times describes the explosion differently: “Dazed and battered survivors, half-naked and dripping in highly combustible gas, crawled inch by inch in pitch darkness, willing themselves to the lifeboat deck. . . . Crew members, certain they were about to be cooked alive, scrambled into enclosed lifeboats for shelter, only to find them like smoke-filled ovens.”

    The Final Hours
    .

Crew members were cut down by shrapnel, hurled across rooms and buried under smoking wreckage. Some were swallowed by fireballs that raced through the oil rig’s shattered interior. Dazed and battered survivors, half-naked and dripping in highly combustible gas, crawled inch by inch in pitch darkness, willing themselves to the lifeboat deck.
    It was no better there.

That same explosion had ignited a firestorm that enveloped the rig’s derrick. Searing heat baked the lifeboat deck. Crew members, certain they were about to be cooked alive, scrambled into enclosed lifeboats for shelter, only to find them like smoke-filled ovens.a

“Speaking of stupidity in today’s NYT we have an article that now claims we have global warming and the hottest month and decade ever and it is causing (wait for it) record snow and global record low temperatures!”

More heat evaporates water, more water in the atmosphere gives you more precipitation, such as snow.

Global record low temperatures aren’t the same as the *average* global temperature rising. Some global warming models predict that cold areas will get colder and hot areas will get hotter as weather patterns are disrupted and hot/cold air isn’t circulated anymore. Imagine if the vents in your house were blocked off. The kitchen would get hotter while the basement would get colder.

If the hot gets hotter and cold colder, then we’re in trouble in terms of food production. When powerful cold and warm fronts meet they produce harsh weather. If we lose our nice temperate zone, it winds up being too hot to grow food, too cold to grow food, or the weather is too erratic to grow food reliably.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

    From your article:
    .
“But all agree that vastly more information is needed about the major influences on the earth’s climate. Indeed, it is to gain such knowledge that 38 ships and 13 aircraft, carrying scientists from almost 70 nations, are now assembling in the Atlantic and elsewhere for a massive 100-day study of the effects of the tropical seas and atmosphere on worldwide weather. The study itself is only part of an international scientific effort known acronymically as GARP (for Global Atmospheric Research Program).”
    .
If you read the 1974 article, you would, also, know that it was only a sample of air temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere – half the planet – and data only over a four year period.
    .
I will give credit to you that you used a reasonable source, even though you cherry picked once again.

    .
Just because there have been some arguments made by vegans that one can substitute for meats and dairy and by non-vegan vegetarians that one can substitute meat does not mean that anybody in the medical/scientific community recommends either lifestyle above a reasonable consumption of meat and dairy.
    .
Sugar remains on the list of foods one can go without forever, or, if consumed, in moderation. That hasn’t changed.

“I repeat as I said before, liberals supposedly believe in evolution and survival of the fittest but continually intervene into that theory with “endangered species”.”
    .
    You’re so ridiculous.
    .
Right now we are at one of evolution’s most awkward moments like the huge pliosaur It is that evolution found a winner.
    .
Strangely enough, you really don’t want to be a winner of evolution because, if you are – and, like the huge pliosaur, are the winner, you will destroy your own food sources unless you are a sapient creature which can stop, look at each creature which may go extinct, find out what it does in the food chain and, if it is going to be needed to prevent catastrophe 100, 1,000 or 10,000 years from now with it’s absence, you can keep the creatures from going into extinction.
    .
Scientific – but as you like to say “liberal” – theory is that of human superiority to the point where we could easily over the next few hundred years destroy our own climate and, by being so successful (in evolution being “successful” means having babies that live, not being the dinosaur with a nice apartment on 5th avenue) destroy what we will need for our survival.
    .
How many bears have built cities of eight million? How many times have suburban sprawl of tigers destroyed shopping malls?
    .
Obviously we can and do trample over animal habitats with temporary impunity. If we can find out which of these species we are ruining that we will need in the future, we will last far, far longer than the dinosaurs.

Only a complex liberal mind can understand how global warming and hot temperatures can cause lower temperatures and snow. It seems last winter when it was warmer, the left didn’t try to push that argument. Every year a new excuse.
    .
No, it shouldn’t be that hard even for a simple “conservative” mind. Weather is a data point which, no matter how interesting, tells you very little about a large complex system, such as global climate. What you need to understand those are many large data sets. The relevant data set for knowing simply whether we have global warming is whether we have a general rise of mean average global temperatures. We do. A truly terrifying rise.
    .
If that’s not simple enough for you, here it is in graphic form. It’s not a picture of it snowing last night, it’s a picture of anthropogenic global warming over time:

    .
You don’t have to write two paragraphs of ‘liberals are just stupid’ to say that it was an ignorant statement confusing the scientific concept of survival of the fittest in the evolutionary sense and the concious choice to kill someone because of a irrational understanding.
    .
“liberals supposedly believe in evolution and survival of the fittest but continually intervene into that theory”.
    .
Again – your average person with common sense understands the concept of adapting through evolutionary process; only troglodytes assume that the idiot with the biggest gun somehow is the pinnacle of the evolutionary scale.
    .
Most people with common sense also know that being ontop of the food chain doesn’t mean you can slaughter everything else. Our survival depends on this chain. Remove enough pivotal spieces out of it and you have a slow but brutal suicide. I understand that you need to make this a ideologue point but that’s how it is with people who argue whether the sky is blue or not.

Estimated B-2 (Stealth Jet) Acquisition Costs
    (Then-year dollars in millions)
    .
    Total unit acquisition cost
    Dec 1994 $2,247
    Dec 1995 $2,265
    Dec 1996 $2,131

While the B-2′s performance met requirements for initial operations, the aircraft are unable to meet intended deployment requirements because some low-observable features require substantial maintenance and the aircraft are more sensitive to climate and moisture than expected…

The Air Force decided it was unrealistic to deploy the B-2 without shelters, as planned, because some low-observable materials are not as durable as expected and require lengthy maintenance, some in an environmentally controlled shelter after each flight. In addition, B-2s must be kept in shelters because of their sensitivity to moisture, water, and other severe climatic conditions….

Problems with low-observable materials have also affected the percentage of time the B-2 was partially or fully capable of completing a mission, which was significantly less when low observability was considered. When low observability was not considered, the mission-capable rate was 66 percent for a 12-month period ending March 1997. However, when low-observability problems were considered for the same period of time, the rate dropped significantly to 26 percent.
    .
…Air Force officials said it is unlikely that the aircraft’s sensitivity to moisture and climates or the need for controlled environments to fix low-observability problems will
ever be fully resolved, even with improved materials and repair processes.

As you say, the whole “goodwill to all men” concept, which is a secular misinterpretation of Luke 2:14. I don’t have a problem with goodwill. You can get some of it if from the left if you compromise; meaning go along with everything that they want and don’t bother us with anything about God. But that’s rather pointless, isn’t it?

[1] And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
[2] (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
[3] And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
[4] And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
[5] To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
[6] And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
[7] And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
[8] And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
[9] And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
[10] And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
[11] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
[12] And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
[13] And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
[14] Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
    .
    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_%27Peace_on_Earth_Goodwill_Toward_Men%27_mean
    .
It could also be worded: “Glory to God, and on earth, peace among men who please God” or “among men with whom God is pleased”
    Therefore the correct answer is:
Peace on earth = peace between men and God
Good will toward men = God’s peace between himself and men who accept his Son

The above answer is based on this argument:

“Peace on earth, goodwill to men”? The Latin has it, `et in terra pax hominibus, bonae voluntatis”. Note the Latin genitive case in the words `bonae voltuntatis’. The phrase properly rendered is, “PEACE ON EARTH TO MEN OF GOOD WILL”. The angels’ words are not universalist, if you get my drift. by elcid1970

While they’re at it, why not have China take a crack at all those pie-in-the-sky SDI programs, like X-ray lasers and particle beam weapons?

The AMS has taken the position that global warming is happening and increased levels of CO2 is the culprit. After studying under one of the most respected climatologists he made it clear that our atmosphere is a very complex and fragile environment and really we don’t exactly know what such levels of CO2 will do. As far as forcasters being wrong about snow amounts winter forcasting is one of the most challenging forecasts to make. There are so many variables that come into play and the models can’t take all these variables into account but they are pretty darned accurate. Models can give us a broad understanding of what could occur and that is the same when modeling future global conditions. Of course it will not be 100% correct but they give us an idea of what we may expect. To dismiss the use of modeling because the snow total forecast was a bit off is a little misleading. http://www.ametsoc.org/policy/2009geoengineeringclimate_amsstatement.html
Most scientists follow where the data takes them and I don’t know any climatologists intentionally trying to mislead or just to make money.

First of all, have a look at the wiki answers post, your interpretation has been disputed.
    .
Second of all…you’re not suggesting that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is meant to be understood by humankind to mean something like “good will to men, except for those leftists over there with whom I have violent political disagreement,” are you?

Unfortunately, Obama is taking a crack at SDI. We’re looking to build a missile defense system in Europe and courting Russian cooperation. In fact, the New START treaty (a mostly symbolic nuclear arms reduction coupled with $80 billion to be spent in “modernizing” our nuclear arsenal) is seen as a step in that direction:
    .
Missile defense has been among Republicans’ concerns with the (START) treaty… others have expressed concern that the treaty would limit deployment of a missile shield in Europe, although the pact would not directly restrict any current plans. During a NATO summit meeting in Lisbon this month, Mr. Obama invited (President Dmitri) Medvedev of Russia to explore participating in the missile defense system.

At the Lisbon meeting, Mr. Medvedev had accepted NATO’s invitation to consider participating in a European missile defense system…

    .
FYI, START I was proposed by Reagan and signed by the elder Pres Bush. New START includes an $80 billion defense spending increase and is aimed toward building a missile defense system that would never work at stopping non-existent Iranian nuclear weapons. Perhaps the real goal of New START and the missile system is to justify NATO’s existence.
    .
    Damn liberal, that Obama..

Per: a mostly symbolic nuclear arms reduction coupled with $80 billion to be spent in “modernizing” our nuclear arsenal.
    .
“President Obama promised… to spend $80 billion over 10 years to maintain and modernize the nation’s nuclear arsenal, a commitment that could help win Republican support for his new arms control treaty with Russia.
    (…)
The (New START) treaty requires each side to deploy no more than 1,550 strategic warheads and 700 bombers, missiles and submarine launchers, and it establishes a new verification system to replace the one that expired along with the original Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in December.
    .
Documents sent to the Senate detailed how the cuts would be made. At least 30 missile silos, 34 bombers and 56 submarine launch tubes would be taken out of service. But the United States could remove missiles from their silos without actually destroying them. Most of the bombers will be converted to conventional use. None of the 14 strategic nuclear submarines will be retired; instead, each will have 4 of its 24 launchers removed.

SZ, the far left doesn’t believe in a personal savior. They believe that they are going to save the world.
    .
You’re not suggesting that angels gave us the Gospel are you?
    .
The passage states that they were praising God, not giving instructions.
    .
I don’t have a violent political agreement with anybody on the left. Where would you get that idea?

  • stuartzechman

It’s pretty obvious you have very little practical idea of what the left or the far left believe or don’t believe.
    .
Of course, I’m not suggesting that the angels gave us the Gospel according to Luke. Luke did, obviously.
    .
The angels’ praise was indirectly instructive, obviously, as they described the coming of Christ and His Word as intended for human acceptance. They were not directly instructing humanity, they were announcing Christ and His instructions.
    .
(It’s hard to believe Christians would actually have a difficult time understanding that.)
    .
You might not have violent disagreement with those on the left, but you certainly have evidenced a great deal of hostility toward what you mistakenly believe we think.

  • liberalmeltdown

Even a casual observation of the left results in the conclusion that they believe that they have to “save the earth.”

There are many more examples of this from the far left. Perhaps you missed the last several years.
