Holiday Cheer

Amid major legislative achievements – nuclear-arms pacts, repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” tax deals – sometimes it’s the smaller items that matter most, at least to some people. I think it’s great that in this case Congress did the right thing. We Americans almost always respond generously when made aware of individual instances of need. It’s when we have to consider a million instances of need that our eyes glaze over or we come up with responses like “Why should we give people money for not working?”

A single death is a tragedy. A million deaths rapidly become yesterday’s news.

I heard about this story over a year ago. Glad to see something was finally done to help this young lady and her son–who does happen to be US citizen.
