Not A Good Sign

Air Force helicopter rescue units in Afghanistan have begun carrying blood on their missions again because so many U.S. troops are now being wounded there.

Mental Ills Top Reason U.S. Troops Now Hospitalized

Four of the top five non-combat medical conditions sending troops to the hospital in 2011 were mental ailments, the Pentagon reports:

We need to get out of that area STAT. We went in there to fight al-Queda and they are now gone with most in Pakistan, Yemen, Ethiopia and smaller gangs in Europe and the US. The Taliban are a bunch of illerate thugs who do not understand why we are fighting them. They have been told we are there to take over their country. The CNN program “The Taliban” presents an excellent overview of their motives. They are not a threat to us – no planes, ships, tanks, etc… Why are we fighting them? In so far as the so called Afghanistan – it isn’t even a real country. There is no central authority. The area is ruled by Drug and War Lords. They could give a s— less about Karzai.
The war is draining the US – with lives and economically. As one American General stated, it would take 100 years to change their culture. While I don’t question their evil ways — it is not the responsility of the US to change their mentality.

An un-winnable war. Time to leave Afghanistan now.

I actually agree with Rusty on Afghanistan.
    .
Setting that aside, I would also point out that carrying blood on rescue missions makes good sense in any scenario. In war, people get hurt…

Do the have an ample supply of corageous restraint medals too? Or do they store them at Dover for when the boxes arrive?

Now, see, liberals and conservatives can agree on some things.

Odd, though, I can imagine three or four years ago, you probably would taken up the meme of anti-Americanism against anybody who said we should leave the Middle East.

Afghanistan is what destroyed the USSR, it can destroy us too if we are not careful.

erieangel, the USSR also had huge self-inflicted economic problems, esp. the error of spending most of their funds on the military instead of the people. It would be interesting to ponder what would’ve happened across Eruope if they had allowed the Prague Spring reforms to continue.

I strongly opposed the war in Iraq as I had little doubt there were no weapons of mass destruction there. My views were expressed in a lengthy letter published in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. I had no doubt then, and do not now, that the war was based on lies created by then Deputy Secretary of Defense Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, Libby and others who were concerned (documented) about Israel once our troops were asked to leave Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia wanted our troops out as it was the main gripe of al-Queda (they did not want foreign troops in the land that houses Mecca). Attacking Iraq would defuse them before they could attack Israel. Of course, then Secretary of Defense Rumsfield thought the war would last 6 hours, 6 days or maybe six weeks. Cheney thought the Iraqis would greet us with kisses and flowers. Piss Pour research and analysis.
I supported the war in Afghanistan — but only to attack al-Queda and possibly find Bin Ladin. As everyone now knows, all we did is push them to other countries.
I lived in Iraq years ago as a member of the US Foreign Service. It was a very difficult assignment — hot and hostile.
