I'll Be Home for Christmas…

Staff Sgt. Patrick Zeigler

Poignant story from the Killeen Daily Herald:

SALADO, Texas – A soldier who was severely wounded in the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting at Fort Hood and his fiancee are getting the house of their dreams, courtesy of the ABC television show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and an army of volunteers working this week. Staff Sgt. Patrick Zeigler, who returned home from Iraq two weeks prior to the shooting, was hit four times in last year’s attack and suffered a nearly fatal wound to his head.

Zeigler’s head wound forced his doctors to remove 20 percent of his brain, and, among other things, he has had to learn to walk again. The dead die only once. It’s important to note that as the wounded — of wars abroad or craziness at home — fade from the news, their challenges don’t.

Mental Ills Top Reason U.S. Troops Now Hospitalized

Four of the top five non-combat medical conditions sending troops to the hospital in 2011 were mental ailments, the Pentagon reports:

Pls explain why our government couldn’t a) pay this guy’s medical bills and b) provide him with a place to live so he wouldn’t have to rely on a reality TV show to begin with….

With all the fuss about tax rate increases, or other recent issues. Thankfully there are companies and individuals out in the private sector who still have Charity as a standard in their respective company’s or individual values.
    .
Thank you ABC for sharing your wealth and using your media to get folks together to help someone like Staff Sgt. Patrick Zeigler and his family.
    .
While the nay-sayers may put down someone like Glenn Beck, this has been one of the main areas he has asked us all to do now for over 2 years. Faith, Hope and Charity have been the foundation of this country since it’s inception. Basic core values that thankfully continue. It is not about redistribution of wealth as our progressive friends would like to see happen in this country. It is about individual responsibility and helping those in need. The value in this mindset is how great you feel when you do become successful, and are at a point in your life that you can give back.

You realize of course that for every chartitable event filmed for TeeVee there are tens of thousands of similarly deserving people who get ignored.

Not to take away from what ABC has done, but if you think it represents an example of why we don’t need a social safety net and can rely on public charity to mitigate hopelessness, then you have a lot yet to learn.

I sure don’t see private charities sending troops to war…or, in this case, to being maimed by a crazed individual.

    .
Want to share where you get your stats of “tens of thousands of similarly deserving people” from? Identify who those people are?
    .
While Hassan the domestic terrorist attacked those including Sgt Zeigler without provocation, I don’t remember that the number injured was in the “ten’s of thousands”.

We live in the most prosperous, most wealthy country in the world. Those who are considered to be poor in this country would be among the 10% most wealthiest people of the world.
    .

Fortysix percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a threebedroom house with oneandahalf baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.
    .
Seventysix percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, 30 years ago, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.
    .
Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than twothirds have more than two rooms per person.
    .
The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)
    .
Nearly threequarters of poor households own a car; 30 percent own two or more cars.
    .
Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.
    .
Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.
    .
Seventy-three percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and a third have an automatic dishwasher.

I’m sure this poor fella just feels horrible…

  • http://therealestamerican.wordpress.com therealestamerican

See? This video is the perfect example. Did the Real American who filmed this actually go and help? No! They filmed it so it could be used to bash liberals. And possibly immigrants.
    .
That’s how you do it. By using an anecdotal tragedy to make your point. Facts are for liberals. Conservatives play to peoples fears. That’s where action’s at.

give to this poor unfortunate have not

What does having adequate employment opportunities nationwide have to do with “giving to the poor unfortunate”? You guys can’t even keep you own slogans straight.

WTF is wrong with you ideologues? Seriously? WTF is wrong?
    .
First you have Free over here wrapping himself in the flag pretending that he gives a sh!t about the person shot using him as a tool to attack liberals and then we have your awkward attempt to sarcasm taking this aweful persons horrible act as some kind of attack on ‘wealth distribution’. So WTF is wrong with you people?
    .
I’ve learned in the past 2 years that for ideologues such as yourself your tribe comes first, this country be damned. We’re just a bunch of snot nosed children for having the elitists idea that we’re all in it together and better come up with solutions that’ll bring us back from the abyss, while you old farts dry hump the carcass of this nation for table scraps while telling us to get of your perfectly groomed idea of a lawn.
    .
I don’t know what’s worse – the situation that required that this soldier had to rely on charity (ratings) to get a decent home to live in or some @sshole preying on the oldest and weakest in our society. Or a bunch of psychotic ideologues using them as props against their political opposition as if you represent the American ideal and we’re scum.
    .
Way to lower your own humanity to score political points. I hope you’re not such a radical @sshole in real life but I wouldn’t bet against myself.

Don’t blow a gasket hippy. And good luck trying to corner the market on humanity. We see right through it time and again. Willing to bet you this attacker (read scum of the earth) had a record a mile long and should have beeen already put apart from society. Just another example of liberal douchbag compassion “everyone needs a second chance” mentality that causes this type of behavior to not just continue, but to flourish. Had I been there I would have removed him from the face of the earth, and he would be no one’s problem ever again. But that “ideology” is cold and compassionateless t to the likes of you huh?, you that hold the patent on “humanity”. Give me a f@@king break!

A Real American know how to deal with a situation like this! With more violence! Double down! Let’s Roll! A Real American Man would put that criminal down. I pretend to keep a loaded AK-47 by the window for the exact same reason. If I ever see a crime being committed in the street, I’m gonna give that cad what for! As soon as I’m done uploading the video of it to the YouTube with a comment about closing the borders and libtards being libtarded.
    .
Because that’s what A Man does!

    @therealestamerican:
    .
I’ve been reading your posts for a couple of days now. At first I thought you were another right wing ideaologue. Then, I started getting the feeling you were mocking them. While the right is so easy to mock (though you do it better than I ever could) I’m wondering where you actually stand. How do you really feel about the “millions for millionaires” program, the 13 month extension of current unemployment which leaves the 99ers out in the cold (some literally), about Obama yelling at his base?

  • hippooath

Having a ideology is for most part good. Being a ideologue means you say you believe in something but every action you do betrays that.
    .
I’ll give you a break when you stop being such a ideologue troll. Reality check – the guy who robbed the 91 year old is a DB. Regardless of what his excuse is. It has nothing to do with liberalism or conservatism. A DB is a DB in every single political camp. You’re the only one that makes a political point out of it.

I’m thinking that while he has had to get his wounds treated at Temple, the Army paid for it. It’s not uncommon for the military to send active-duty personnel for treatment. A lot of time it’s because of bedspace, or the amount of post-op treatment needed, or for whatever reason.
    .
As for their home, on-post housing is always in short supply at every military installation in the Department of Defense. Couples some times have to move to off-post housing (with a housing allowance to offset the cost), while they wait for a house to open for them. Also, considering his condition, it’s possible that they will have to wait even longer for an on-post home that’s handicapped-accessible.
    .
I don’t really know what his situation is, I’m just speculating based on what I saw happen in the Army. But I’ve always thought that the military takes care of its own. It might not be the best, or the fastest, and it may seem maddening at times, but it does make the effort.

  • abdullah69

Glove puppet’s (aka twothirdsrocks) lack of compassion for the victim derives from the knowledge she must be a Democrat. Any 91 year old Republican, male or female, will have owned and operated many weapons systems during their lifetime, maybe even standing shoulder to shoulder with those valiant troopers at Kent State all those decades ago, and would have surely taken the assailant down.
