Chiefly Opposition to Gays in Uniform

While the Pentagon’s exhaustive study on integrating openly gay men and women into the military convinced President Obama, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, of the wisdom of repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” — a position each already held — it didn’t move the guys who actually have to lead the troops under any new policy. On Friday, the chiefs opposed to the change cited challenging conditions in Afghanistan as a key reason for their stance, just as Obama was visiting the country during a holiday trip to thanks U.S. troops there.

Marine Gen. James Amos / Dod photo

“I cannot reconcile, nor turn my back, on the negative perceptions held by our Marines who are most engaged in the hard work of day-to-day operations in Afghanistan,” Gen. James Amos, the Marine commandant, told the Senate Armed Services Committee. “We asked for their opinions, and they gave them to us. Their message to me is that the potential exists for disruption to the successful execution of our current combat mission should repeal be implemented at this time.” Amos said all he wants “is the opportunity to do that at a time of our choosing when my Marines aren’t singularly, tightly focused on what they’re doing in a very deadly environment.”

Three of the six senior military leaders testifying before the panel warned of dire consequences if the 17-year old ban is lifted now. Army Gen. George Casey and Air Force Gen. Norton Schwartz both said they could implement the change in their forces in the coming months, although they said they would rather not do so. “I would not recommend going forward at this time given everything the Army has on its plate,” Casey said. Schwartz said he would rather delay lifting the ban until 2012. Gen. James Cartwright, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Adm. Gary Roughead, the chief of naval operations, and Adm. Robert Papp, the Coast Guard commandant, all voiced support for repealing the gay ban.

(For language mavens: in their opening statements, three of the six officers used only the word “gay” or “gays” in discussing the issue; Amos only used the word “homosexual,” the other Marine, Cartwright, used both “gay” and “homosexual” and Navy chief Roughead managed to get through his entire statement without using either term. The American Psychological Association says that “the term homosexuality has been associated in the past with deviance, mental illness, and criminal behavior, and these negative stereotypes may be perpetuated by biased language.”)

The Pentagon’s nearly year-long review, released earlier this week, found that up to 60 percent of troops in all-male ground combat units are concerned about repealing the law, although throughout the force the level is half as high. Lawmakers who share the three chiefs’ chariness over the change quickly embraced their views as reason to keep the ban in place. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the senior Republican on the panel, said the chiefs’ concerns about repealing the law means more time is needed to study the matter, including testimony from senior enlisted troops and combat commanders. That dims chances for a Senate vote ending the ban during its current lame-duck session (the House has already voted to lift it). Repeal will be even more difficult next year, after the GOP takes control of the House.

There were “dire consequences” predicted too when Truman ordered desegregation. Didn’t happen. (see Mark’s last post / comments for links, material) Though if when DADT is lifted and certain commanders disobey, isn’t that insubordination?

  • GivenUp

To be fair, this isn’t congress but i have no doubt your statement stands.

Yup. And couldn’t BO go ahead and make an executive order to get rid of it? (I take it he could have all along yet chose to wait to “seek approval.”)

“We checked in with our old executive order expert, University of Wisconsin political science professor Kenneth Mayer, for a little help.

Did anyone ask what the ‘dire consequences’ will be? That the Marines might get shot at? What’s the worst thing that can happen if this is repealed?

I wonder how the singular focus will change amongst proffesional soldiers commited to their corps if DADT and the very people they probably know are gay are allowed to say they’re gay and not be thrown out.

Free Friday ‘I dropped the soap’ slip ups in the shower?

I very much doubt that the marine who’s going to get his postum medal for bravery and happen to be gay might not save his squad because he was looking at Johnsons @ss instead.

These are military commanders. I wish they also had the b@lls to spell out exactly what dire consequences we’re talking about if anyone who is gay is allowed to be gay and not get kicked out of the force if they do.

When are we going to grow away from absolute horsesh!t logic and mature into using facts to support what’s best for our nation and people.

Worrying about gay people ain’t it.

The law was passed in the course of President Clinton trying to eliminate persecution of homos by the military. Before law, which was a weak compromise with the congressional right wing, it was executive prerogative.
    .
It will happen eventually, but these public statements by these commanders are obstructive and of no benefit. To me it reflects lack of character and incompetence than anything.

  • kevin

As Daniel Drzener (one of the last sane conservatives) notes, whatever the hypothetical (and hyperventilating) talk about consequences if DADT is repealed, there are actually dire consequences associated with keeping the current policy.

The perceptual bias in the testimony to date is focusing on the risks and costs of changing the status quo. Will unit cohesion be compromised? Will the change undermine national security during wartime? This partially misses the point: the status quo is undermining national security far more than any change. The rigorous enforcement of DADT is preventing competent and patriotic soldiers from serving their country, particularly in high-demand positions like, say, Arabic translators. It’s fine to say that repealing DADT might have some costs — but those costs have to be weighed against the costs of continuing as is. And from what I read, those costs are serious to the country and debilitating to the affected soldiers.

There’ve been plenty of references to Truman’s desegregation of the military in regard to DADT, and now, as for letting the “boots on the ground” decide, he also bravely yanked the pompous Gen. MacArthur out of his boots and home for challenging his authority. The Joint Chiefs should have a new staff now, with the exception of Adms. Mullen, and Roughead. More capable replacements for the others are a dime a dozen.

A gay pilot may have saved the lives of nine US soldiers recently killed.

A special compliment to the discharged soldiers … you are the finest soldiers indeed … in a battle and a war much greater than you will ever know!

It is actually a bigger moment in history … soldiers being discharged are indeed exposing something far greater … the realization that there is something far more evil at work … hateful religion which should be discharged from society — period.

Perhaps the irony might be — that the bogus hogus pogus hate-speech with his hateful leviticus 20:13 … might indeed bring the bible and torah — into a banned status and the churches and synagogues shut down! Churches are committing hate crimes and more succinctly a violent criminal offence against a federally protected minority … namely the gay community.

    Kids bullied into suicide …!

It is written; so therefore it shall be? We are the chosen people? Such a wicked fantasy. To see the religious lunatics manipulate government and our lives is shameful.
If the black community or women had it written that they should be put to death; how would they like that?

If blacks’ or women’s rights were cast to the masses to decide … then the majority or lunatic religious fringe in this case — has the advantage to decide minority rights.

Being black or left-handed or being gay is just as natural.

How would you like it … if hate speech was directed to your brother or sister as you sat in the pew; spewed by some better than thou religious lunatic with a hateful black book about Leviticus — under his arm?

This holier than thou – written so there it shall be — fallacy; must be stopped! It is a criminal offence to cause harm onto others physically or with written items … the bible and torah have been getting away with this for ages.

This bogus religious filth should be banned. It exists as a tax exempt structure which discriminates against human rights. The pope, bishops and mormons are cult members promoting discrimination against minorities.

That bogus black book called the bible should be banned. Religion and the churches should now be exposed as a bigoted structure that gets away with hate mongering. Love between two guys or girls existed long before these cults existed. By enjoying their tax exempt status and benefits from the state it also puts churches at the mercy of the state; to be forced to adhere to the human rights laws.

Religion is thriving like a cancerous growth on society that should be stopped in its tracks; outlawed & banned.

There is no scientific evidence to prove any of the cross related bogus elements of christianity. Our early human ancestors; on this earth … go back more than 6 million years … 5,996,000 years before the Greeks, Romans and the Jews. Christianity is basically a 2010 year old fictional cult.

In the year 300 AD when Emperor Constantine, who to some was the first pope; went on to fabricate & market Christianity – a fantasy – which turned out to be one of the most hateful & evil concoctions ever perpetrated on the world. Moses was one of history’s biggest hate-mongers who supposedly wrote that Leviticus filth in 1445 BC!
Bibles and the torah which includes leviticus — should be immediately banned … for promoting hatred against minorities … namely the gay community and the crosses removed from all schools and churches.

The Right Honourable Prime Minister of Canada Jean Chretien told the Vatican that there was to be no cross erected over the Canadian Parliament buildings figuratively speaking; when the Pope demanded the Prime Minister go against gay rights. An Alberta bishop had the audacity to say that The Canadian Prime Minister would go to hell for going against the church. Such outrageous evil threats. The Right Honourable Prime Minister in return; basically told the Pope to go to Hell!
The Honourable Irwin Cotler, Canadian Minister of Justice, stood for equal rights for the gay community.
With reference to protecting the children: The Honourable Hedy Fry, member of the Canadian Liberal Parliament, who happens to be a doctor who delivered many babies; spoke eloquently to defend the rights of babies being born and stated that she was in fact defending their rights by speaking on behalf of equal rights for the children and youth of the future — defending their integrity and dignity.

Minority rights must be decided by a dignified judicial system and/or a compassionate government.

Tell them to take that cross and shove it where the sun don’t shine and pay their taxes along the way before they take that cross down forever with its final station; extinction.
My father fought at the front on D-Day in Normandy … through the Battle of the Scheldt to Germany and grandfather was a Sgt. Major at Vimy. My Dad who was a catholic — is alive today at 87 and doesn’t believe in santa claus — an easter bunny or any of that bogus cross related filth.

United States is supposedly fighting for democracy but within the U.S. they treat gays like secondary citizens.

I am the son of a catholic father who never went to church and a protestant mother who took us to church and Sunday school. Onward christian soldiers; I think not. Such absolute drivel. To be manipulated by a santa claus; an easter bunny and worst of all a bogus cross? One should appreciate each day of life and not expect another and if there is it might be given by a God of Love.

The Vatican basically supported Hitler and religion is responsible for more corruption and violence in the world. Pope Ratzinger was involved in the Nazi youth. The Pope with his blatant witchcraft related to the bible and its hateful beliefs; tries to rule with extreme prejudice against a world … that may fall victim to religions’ absolute evil. Many theologians state quite correctly that the birth; crucifixion; resurrection and other elements of christianity actually didn’t even happen! The pope is running a bigger fraud than Madoff’s $50 billion ripoff. Today’s evangelical extremists are like the nazis who cast others into ovens & are actually supremacists – who practice their bogus hocus pocus – and are trying to suppress and deprive others of their happiness and their legal rights in an open and proud society.

Einstein stated in a letter recently auctioned that the bible was a collection of primitive legends. He said believing in God was childish and he as a Jew is no different than another person and are not chosen by God.

Do you want to be lambs at the slaughter or be wise and reject religious cultist manipulation? Mean & nasty; run by evil and bogus religious cults from Rome or wherever. Is this the world you want? The pope talks about ending prejudice and hate; what a hypocrite!

Religion is a crutch for the insecure. Appreciate every day and if there is no tomorrow; then know that you were fortunate to have lived on this earth!

A great story pertains to a boy at a catholic school in Oshawa, Ontario who wanted to take his boyfriend to his school prom. The evil catholic school forbid this. A father of one of the boys is an employee with General Motors Canada and the courageous union leader Buzz Hargrove stood up for the boys’ rights. The boy took his case through the courts and because the evil catholic school was benefiting from government funding which demands equal rights void of discrimination; the judge ordered the school to allow the two young boys to attend together. Their limo arrived at their prom with adoring onlookers.

To think of Matthew Shepard choking on his own blood after being savagely beaten; virtually sanctioned by the church is evil beyond comprehension; yet is the same as boys being bullied into suicide; most likely being supported by the bullies parents’ religious cults. Bigotry and hatemongering against gays should be banned. It is a sometimes rare occurrence to fall in Love and to hold that person in your heart and be loved in return … it is something that should be celebrated! If it is between two guys or girls all the better. It takes even more courage to defend that LOVE!

Abused gay people should definitely talk to or write to their parents; friends; teachers & school principal … about the issue. Your story may save another person! You should strive to be great and one day you may have a respected platform to help others … like Elton John, Elizabeth Taylor, Ellen Degeneres & David Geffen.

China respects its gay people … Shanghai Pride is a month-long celebration of gay culture in China’s largest city.

According to biblical law, a father can sell his daughter as a slave.

This holier than thou – written so there it shall be — fallacy; must be stopped!

It is a criminal offence to cause harm onto others physically or with written items … the bible and torah have been getting away with this for ages. Anti-Semitic speech isn’t allowed – nor is violent anti-gay … hate mongering. It’s now time to shut down the churches and synagogues with bibles and the torah with leviticus 20:13.

Perhaps religious establishments have pushed too far from San Francisco to Washington — and it may backfire to such a degree that the churches and synagogues themselves should be shut down!

I support the repeal of DADT, but I’m pretty confused about some peoples’ problem with the use of the word homosexual. That’s using scientific terms to describe gays. It would be like having a problem with using the term Homo Sapiens to refer to humanity, or heterosexual to refer to straight people.

  • grape_crush

Actually, when DADT is repealed, it’s not the gay soldiers that will impact combat effectiveness.

It’s the actions of their homophobic teammates and leadership that will be the problem, pretty much as it’s always been.

  • Ivy_B

Scott Brown has announced that he is going to vote to support repeal. Maybe it will happen after all.

The difference is that there are valid reasons to be intolerant of religion. There is no such basis for homosexual persecution except as based in religion. Wow, what a load of crap!
    .
I am an atheist and find you way, way over the top.
    .
If you do not believe in any deities, as I do not, then it stands to reason that religions were created by people.
    .
How many people find gay sex very creepy?
    .
98% of us – all heterosexuals, by definition, find gay sex at least a little bit creepy.
    .
Next, one after another, people invented deities to say that what every sane person believes is good (don’t cheat on your spouse, don’t steal.. etc, etc) then began to say that they and their religion discovered that their deity invented this.
    .
A religion is no better nor worse than the personal character of the individual who practices that religion.
    .
As an atheist, I am somewhat offended that somebody is blaming all anti-gay beliefs on religion.
    .
It just requires maturity to realize that if a couple of gays somewhere are, in their homes doing something the rest of us find really disgusting it does not mean that gayness is contagious nor a sign of bad character. It is, like any sex act, something which should be kept private.
    .
When I was younger and a practicing Catholic (even a communion minister) I found nobody more irritating than Evangelical Christians or the the far right of the Catholic Church (see Mel Gibson, when he is sober enough and not busy beating up his woman, to find out what the extreme far right of the Catholic Church is like).
    .
As an atheist, I find extremist atheists very irritating.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

What is most left out of this debate by conservatives, as usual, is a sense of history.

The ban of gays in the military mostly dates back to 1916 and The Blue Discharge.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_discharge#History

Prior to that point, gays had to be individually court marshaled. With court marshals being such time consuming and expensive events, it is clear that there must have been many gays who fought in the armed forces.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what has been going on since 1916. Since 1916 gays were forced to lie about their orientation.

Since it is not at all in our national interest that gay soldiers lie about themselves, obviously DADT and previous complete bans of homosexuals serving in the military is not in our national interest, but, instead, discourages some gays who want to serve when we are badly short of manpower.

We need more volunteers, so, this is the last time we should discourage any healthy person from joining the armed forces.

patrick, welcome back, haven’t seen any posts for a while. This one is maybe the most bizarre of all time. 98% of “us”? You claim atheism, yet the Catholic brainwash may compromise that, you think? Out of that 98%, there is at least a 5% cushion of Roy Cohn-esque, closet, self-loathing queers, who do more damage to homo equal rights than any gang of real straight people, who don’t really care about it all and certainly are not as dramatic as you. I think you may have a little Roy Cohn Syndrome in you. But, still, welcome back anyway, in all of your dramatic flamboyance.

I’m less concerned with the House – which, with log-cabin Republicans getting greater holds, may see a few of the Republican votes willing to swap. With only a slim majority and only needing to move the needle to 50%, it is probably more doable than convincing 7 Republican Senators plus probably at least 3 to balance Democrat flips

@Apr, thanks. I lost the bet and stuck to it. From midnight 11/2 until the first chance I got on 12/3 I kept my bet with 3xfire3.
    .
    FormerlyJames,
    .
I have heard numbers between 10% and 2% for non-heterosexuals. I know that even in gay friendly cities such as Boston and New York far, far less than 10% of the bars are gay bars and, when in suburbia – unless I am mistaken (which I could be not having lived in suburbia since I was a teenager with no gay relatives nor knowing of any gay people who went to my high school – I am going to guess that there were a few I was unaware of) far less than 1% of the bars are specializing in gay clientele.
    .
So, maybe it is 4%, 6% even 10%, but, between shaky data and no personal knowledge, I would guess 2%.
    .
At the end of the day, who cares exactly how many are treated unfairly, only that they are treated unfairly?
    .
As for religion, my view is this: if you want to find a reason to go out and feed starving orphans, you’ll grab a holy book (Bible, Koran, Torah…) turn to the pages and where it says you must take care of the needy and do so. If you want to go punch a gay guy in the face, then you go to the same holy book and find the section where punching a gay guy in the face is a good idea.
    .
    Roy Cohen?
    .
Besides comparing me to a gay man who hid it – with the idea of hiding it being the worst part – you compared me to a Republican.
    .
That was a little overboard. Don’t compare me to Republicans.
    .
Or are you accusing me of being a closet Catholic who secretly has rosary beads in his hands while typing?
    .
I stand by that people make religions and religions do not make people.

  • http://patricksartor.wordpress.com patricksartor

Let me add in my personal experiences:
    .
In my teens and twenties in churches in a New York Suburb and, later, in Boston I had never heard even once to the best of my knowledge any statements at all about gays. I was aware of the disapproval of gays, but, I never once, as far as I know, recall any statements about gays during the mass.
    .
I did see many appeals to donate canned food for local interfaith soup kitchens, to donate food to disasters around the world, to donate towards scholarship funds for inner city Catholic schools – where most of the students were black non-Catholics, as were most of the scholarship recipients non-Catholic and appeals to volunteer at the soup kitchen or other charities tied directly or indirectly to the parish and community.
    .
This was promptly followed by the most unchristian rush nearing a demolition derby in the parking lot to rush out of the church to get home for lunch.
    .
Abortion we heard about, but not gays.
    .
Also, think of non-religious Japan. No religion requires them to consider gays “sinful”. But if I were gay I would have far preferred a Catholic community over Japan.

  • 11charlie

Any gay who wanted to get into the Marines in any case needs his head examining. Repeal the law and don’t make any more work for yourselves. You spend too much time and money on the non-essentials. The lawyers are the only ones who profit from this nonsense.
