Cash On The Jarhead

When police work doesn’t work, offer money. That’s what the FBI is doing after weeks of investigation have failed to find the person responsible for firing on the Marine museum, a Marine recruiting station (a Coast Guard recruiting station, too) and the Pentagon itself. The feds are offering “up to” $20,000 for information leading to the conviction of the triggerman.

“Evidence has confirmed that shots fired at each of the locations are linked to a single weapon,” the FBI says. “Investigators believe the shooter(s) may have engaged in behaviors that the public may have observed. The shooter(s) was out during the overnight and early morning hours and may have had to provide an explanation or excuse to justify the absence from home or work. The FBI believes that the shooter(s) has a familiarity with the Northern Virginia area from living or working here. The shooter(s) may have experienced a significant personal crisis within the past several months, such as the loss of job, divorce or financial hardship.”

Four of the top five non-combat medical conditions sending troops to the hospital in 2011 were mental ailments, the Pentagon reports:

Are you saying the shooter is a Jarhead?

“Evidence has confirmed that shots fired at each of the locations are linked to a single weapon,”
    .
I hope the weapon the shooter used doesn’t also have a -203 attached to it. That would be scary.

Mark, I hope that wasn’t supposed to be a disparaging remerk:

“When police work doesn’t work, offer money.”

Nothing unusual in that. Police often offer money to sources for information. They’re called “paid informants”; and if you look at wanted posters, there’s often a reward mentioned.

Too bad it doesn’t always work, like the $50 million offered for Bin Laden.

    11charlie,

    “a -203″

    What’s that?
    Just curious.

  • 11charlie

It’s in reference to the picture above. The tube with the trigger that’s underneath the rifle’s barrel is called an M-203 grenade launcher. In military-speak, it’s usually just called a “-203″. It fires a round that has the explosive power of a hand grenade. It’s a weapon I became familiar with back in my Army days.
    .
I thought it was a strange photo to select for the article. A rifle equipped with a grenade launcher is the kind of weapon that you should only find in the hands of someone in the military.

    - Or maybe some teabagimam who wants to exercise his “2nd Amendment rights”?
