Fort Hood Probe: Army Chooses Its Words Carefully

The Army has just released its internal investigation into the Fort Hood shootings a year ago that left 13 people dead at the hands, according to eye-witnesses, of Maj. Nidal Hasan. He’s the Army psychiatrist and Muslim who shouted — according to some of those witnesses — “Allah Akbar” (“God is great”) as he methodically killed 12 fellow soldiers and a civilian. Shot and paralyzed by civilian cops amid the mayhem, he faces a military court martial.

Fort Hood memorial service: a year ago today / DoD

“Taken individually, no single action would have prevented the tragedy at Fort Hood,” said Maj. Gen. Robert Radin, who led the Army’s internal review. But several military personnel who served alongside Hasan privately dispute that claim, contending Hasan’s behavior and words prior to the shootings should have forced him into counseling and perhaps out of the Army.

The Army has rolled out a bunch of initiatives to deal with such threats in the future: an iWatch program — kind of the Army’s version of a neighborhood watch — and iSalute, an “online counter-intelligence program.” In typical Army fashion, it has also created a Threat Awareness and Reporting Program, a Counterintelligence Fusion Cell, and an Army Personnel Security Investigation Center of Excellence.

Sun Tzu said one of the most important rules of war is to know one’s enemy. The Army’s 118-page investigation mentions the word “tragedy” eight times, and “Muslim” zero.

Mr. Thomason, you have a duty to clarify what you mean here. It’s disturbing & deeply offensive as it stands. We all have the right to be narrow, stupid bigots, but we don’t like to see rank religious bigotry as the punchline in an MSM report.

You are making the libtards wacko, Mr Thompson with statements like this. Shame on you.

Don’t you know in libtard La-la-land one is not allowed to speak ill of those who are avowed enemies? You can’t say it is a Muslim Mosque at Ground Zero or anything close to that description. You might offend someone for goodness sake. Shame on you.

As the followers of Obama……..aka Obamabots, you must not press the issue. If you do we will stamp our feet really hard, and in some cases like Whoopie Goldberg and Joy Behar we might just jump up and walk off the set in protest. How dare you?

Thank you, Mark Thompson, for clarifying for all of us that Muslims are the enemy of the United States. We already knew that the United States was the enemy of Muslims, thanks to Rusty, but now we are privy to an additional nuance in this growing chasm.

How Thompson’s observation that the word “Muslim” does not appear in the report equates with “clarifying for all of us that Muslims are the enemy of the United States” escapes me. Quite a stretch.
    .
This also reminds me (with a smile) that during one unpleasant exchange, Exiled asked me (rather maliciously on numerous levels it seemed to me at the time) whether my user name indicated that I was a transvestite.

  • formerlyjames

This was meant for the exchange at #7. I also failed to mention that Exiled did subsequently apologize for the remark, something not often seen following irrelevant insults that so frequently occur on the swamp.

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

Let me be a tad less vague. Mark Thompson cited a Sun Tzu quote about knowing one’s enemy in war. He then went on to point out that the Army’s report failed to mention “Muslim,” which I took as an indication that Thompson believes Muslims to the enemy and the Army is neglecting an important requisite in war, knowing one’s enemy; this is a position I find so contemptible that the only response I could offer was condescending sarcasm towards Thompson. In other words, “We’re not at war with Islam, jackass!”

Could it also be that MT meant the Army isn’t pointing to Islam as the “enemy”?

  • hippooath

Newfreedom ain’t listening. Not do many posts ago he suggested we sent people (liberals and such) on airplanes and shoot them down with F-16′s until it ‘goes away’.
    .
Why would he think that ordinary people placed in impossible situation would eventually radicalize by an inhumane system that prolongs any conflict. The other side (be it ‘turban’ people or ‘libtards’) should just lay down and give up until the charitable ‘winners’ decide when enough is enough.

  • np042

That is how I took it as well, as a sort of snide remark at those who proclaim all Muslims are the enemy. Not that anyone around here would ever generalize and stereotype like that…

  • liberalmeltdown

Tip toeing around the word Muslim, and the reality that terrorists are Muslim, won’t prevent the next terror attack. It didn’t prevent this one. In fact, it helped enable it. Yes, this was a Muslim terrorist attack.
    .
I hope I offended Muslim terrorists.
    .
We need to identify them as who and what they are. The Muslim world needs to deal with the extremists themselves; otherwise, both sides are just sticking their heads in the sand.

  • http://2thirdsrocks.wordpress.com 2thirdsrocks

Hmm. Muslims are not our greatest enemy, but our greatest enemy just happen to be muslim.
    .
Wow! Gotta be so careful how we word things nowadays

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

Would you, by chance, be so readily inclined to offend Israeli terrorists merely posing as Muslims? The false-flag antics of Israel are well-documented, though rarely discussed, and consistently employed to garner more US support for Israel and subsequently more anti-Arab sentiments, such as yours. If you were to find out that many of the “Muslim terrorists” that you so despise were actually Israeli intelligence agents, would you defend them?

  • http://morninglight.wordpress.com/ mL

The Muslim world definitely has to deal with them. But calling all “Muslims” enemies at large doesn’t help.

Recent video, the first 40 seconds are pertinent.

  • Mark Thompson

Life doesn’t occur in a vacuum, my military friends point out. When bad — or good, for that matter — things happen, they say you should glean all intelligence possible to ensure more good things happen and fewer bad things do. They argue that to ignore what apparently was motivating MAJ Hasan is a peculiar form of moral blindness, and unfair to all the good Muslims serving in uniform (they also note that any focus on the issue would only highlight the Army’s possible negligence in dealing with Hasan before he opened fire). To point out that the word “Muslim” is missing from the probe is simply an observation on the Army’s attitude, as is its repeated use of the word “tragedy.” MAJ Hasan, either through malice or insanity, was the enemy that terrible day, and the Army owes its troops its best efforts to travel down every path to make sure something like this never happens again.

    Thanks Exiled. Very compelling.

2thirdrocks, if I used your logic, I would also think:
If I lived in N. Ireland in the past, the Irish are not our greatest enemy, but our greatest enemy just happens to be Irish. I must hate myself.
If I were a victim of priestley pedophilia and a Catholic priest, I might think Catholic clergy are not our greatest enemy, but our greatest enemy is the Catholic clergy. I must hate all Catholic clergy, including myself.
What sense does this make to you?

  • stuartzechman

Thanks so much for responding to commentary with clarifying thoughts, Mark Thompson, it is always greatly appreciated.

  • Exiled_At_Home (formerly Neo)

So, Mark Thompson, you are suggesting that the military generally tries to put together all the specifics of events so as to walk away with the greatest possible understanding of the situation, so, in this instance the decision to not mention Maj. Hasan’s religious conviction is an anomaly. An anomoly, in your opinion, that demonstrates two things, one, the military’s desire to not indict itself for not seeing warning signs and, two, an incomplete understanding of the enemy in this particular case. So, you are of the opinion that Maj. Hasan’s religious affiliation is an important piece of information necessary to fully understand his identity as the enemy? Would stressing his Muslim faith have any positive impact in preventing a similar event in the future?

  • herby002

    2thirds,

    Answer apr’s question. Man up!

  • http://2thirdsrocks.wordpress.com 2thirdsrocks

Our greatest enemy isn’t Irish or catholic. However our greatest enemies are devout muslims.
