Colin Powell for SecDef?

There are lot of reasons to doubt it, but folks are bouncing his name around as someone who might replace Defense Secretary Bob Gates next year. Be fun to watch his confirmation hearing, much of which would been spent swatting away  questions about his February 2003 speech to the United Nations charging Saddam Hussein with hiding weapons of mass destruction.

TOKYO – A shooting war with China may not be inevitable, but a dangerous arms escalation seems a dead certainty. That’s the take from a rare public discussion here this week among naval experts from Japan, the U.S. and China.

Mental Ills Top Reason U.S. Troops Now Hospitalized

What? Why? People are aware that Powell is still, whatever else he may be, a Republican, right?

  • squirmz

Well, he DID endorse Obama for president.

  • freeinpa

“What? Why? People are aware that Powell is still, whatever else he may be, a Republican, right?”
    .
So, regardless of his real credentials for the job, he is automatically disqualified. Now let’s here Team Donkey whine about the Republicans not working in a bipartisan fashion or not wanting this President to succeed.

  • certifiablylazy

And if I recall, this administration has brought in a number of individuals from the Republican party due to their belief in their qualifications. Can’t say that’s too common these hyper partisan days.

    “swatting away”

Yes, because going in front of the entire world’s representatives and lying about the evidence against Iraq is something to be “swatted away” like a pesky fly.

Why isn’t being massively, horribly WRONG about the most important foreign policy decision in a generation enough to discredit one from a cabinet position?

I swear, it is getting to the point where being RIGHT about policy automatically discredits a candidate in the Beltway CW.

  • destor23

@free: –because there are surely qualified Democrats out there who can do the job, and want to. I don’t recall any Republican presidents ever putting Democrats in charge of the Pentagon.

I don’t complain when Republican presidents appoint Republicans to posts in their administrations. Why shouldn’t they?

  • destor23

I know, it’s funny. People still assume this guy is “qualified” for the job even though he’s responsible for our biggest debacle in post Cold War military history and might have lied to get us into it.

  • hernandezusa

“Colin Powell ” is NO republican anymore.

Colin Powell turned is back on the American people.

After OB got into Office Colin Powell became a traitor to everything he once stood for and even came out of the closet and a RACIST and supporter of illegal aliens.

    Colin Powell please retire.

“Democrats in charge of the Pentagon”
    .
It could have more to do with the plain fact Democrats view the Pentagon as a source of funds and not with a view of defense and security

  • square1

Freeper the rest of us wouldn’t hold you in complete contempt if you actually held principled views backed up by real facts. But you represent the worst of politics: a rank partisan that will simply spew whatever you believe makes the GOP look good and the Democrats look bad.
    .
As far as seeing the Pentagon as a “source of funds “……..are you f—ing serious?
    .
Look, I’m the last person who is going to defend the Democrats vis-a-vis the military-industrial complex. But, since Dwight Eisenhower, when has a Republican EVER questioned military spending? When has a Republican EVER tried to make the appropriations process more transparent? When has a Republican EVER pushed for more competitive bidding?
    .
When Republicans talk about reducing spending, they ALWAYS exclude military spending.
    .
Neither Bush nor the GOP Congress insisted about, or even asked for, more oversight in Iraq spending. Consequently the GOP-run Pentagon literally flew pallets of U.S. cash to Iraq where the untraceable funds quickly disappeared into the ether.
    .
In my entire life, I have never heard anyone honestly suggest that Republicans are more likely to spend military funds more wisely than Democrats.

  • Paul-no not that one

If the most important goal is the pleasure of the Beltway media then by all means nominate Powell.
    .
He’s showed such deference to the last Democratic President I’m sure there would be no problems.

Powell could do one thing for the president: deflect some of the criticism that Obama is far to the left.

If the Tea Party wants to call Powell a leftist, then, soon, too, they will have to call dubbya a communist, too.

Outside of that, he will go down in history for two things:

The first man of African Ancestry to be secretary of state and the guy who got duped by Cheney and Ronald Dumsfeld.

Is this conjecture news or just something for the traditional media to waste time promoting.
Biden will switch jobs with Hillary
    Hillary will run in 2012
    Powell will replace Gates
    Obama wont run in 2012
    .
Meanwhile, the wars continue, banks and Wall Street continue to rip us off, money destroys our political future..
    .
Please, gather your skills and put them to better use.

  • nflfoghorn

    Um, he IS retired.

He IS a Republican…more of an Eisenhower centrist (but it’s apparent you don’t know anything about him).

He used illegals in building homes. Wanna put him in jail?

Keep posting – it makes more people see you for the dipstick you are.

  • herby002

I’d consider him for DOD. Beyond his obvious qualifications, Rush Limbaugh almost shorted out his microphone with flying spit while trashing Powell repeatedly as a RINO traitor to real conservatism after he backed Obama. That counts, in my book.
